Effortless DIY Halloween Costume Ideas.

When I think of Halloween, my mind fills not with thoughts of spooks and spells, but with thoughts of happiness and excitement. It’s not the holiday most people consider the most positive with demons, devils, and scary things—but to me, it’s filled with festivity and fun.

I think Halloween is one of the greatest holidays because almost everyone can participate in it. When it comes to wearing Halloween costumes, there’s a sense of community, of people who all just want to get dressed up in something silly or scary or sexy. Just go into any Halloween costume store and you’ll see people joined together, searching for the perfect for Halloween outfit. The search itself evokes a sense of community. And then there’s the time spent at a party or trick-or-treating with others who are decked out in fun costumes. When else do so many people of so many different backgrounds spend time joined together celebrating a holiday in costumes?

Halloween is a great time to use your imagination to craft a costume that is unique and innovative. It’s your annual chance to live a fantastical existence. Whatever you want to be, you can put on a costume and be it (or at least pretend to be it). Consider the possibilities! You can be your favorite character (I’ve been Tinker Bell and Princess Peach multiple times). You can be your dream self or favorite animal (a 1920’s flapper and I am still in love with my peacock outfit… oh the feathers! ). The beauty of Halloween is that you can use your creativity to become whatever you want to be (even if only for a night!).

If you dont already have your Halloween Costume planned out for this upcoming October 31st it’s time to get on it! You dont want to wait till the last minute and get stuck going out as yet another black cat. Not in the mood to go shopping? With a few creative ideas , you can shop cute costumes straight from your closet. I partnered with fashion website, GLAM.com, to put together some fun and entertaining Do It Yourself Halloween Costume YouTube videos. For me, Halloween has—and will always be—a time for celebration and festivity. In my mind, Halloween is New Year’s Eve and Independence Day rolled into one. It’s better than fireworks, more of a rush than champagne. Whether it was tame classroom parties in grade school, wild parties in college, or classy nights out in SF, Halloween has always been a time for celebrating, for dressing up, and for tricks (and treats!). Even if Halloween doesn’t hold the same special place in your heart, I hope you still enjoy the festiveness, doll yourself up in a kick-a$$ costume, and just have FUN with it.

What will you be dressing up as this year? Leave a comment below and let me know what you’ll be for Halloween.

Sending you lots of tricks and treats for your best Halloween yet!

Feeling Stressed? It Could Be Your Relationship….

photo

Feeling stressed? It could be your relationship.

No, not to your honey.

To your technology.

Do you keep your mobile phone with you all the time? Do you feel the constant need to respond to emails, calls, and texts immediately? Are you at the beck and call of every “PING!” you hear?

We are known as the connected generation and there are obvious issues that have stemmed from our constantly plugged in state. The Pew Research Center states that Millennials (those who came of age in the new millennium — currently age 20-36) are the “always on generation“. They’re absolutely right. We text and Snapchat and Kik our friends. We Instagram what we eat and post where we are on Facebook — and that’s all before lunch. We can’t seem to get by without some sort of tech.

We aren’t experiencing life. We’re losing moments with every tap. It’s cheating, really. We may be physically present with our friends and loved ones but we’re texting some one else… or checking a sports score… or tweeting… or playing candy crush saga. Do you remember the last time you went to dinner without taking a picture? Yea, I don’t really either.

We are living life through a device and its just not healthy. If you are feeling burnt out or stressed, it could be your overconnectvity to tech. Here are some signs it might be time for a digital relationship detox:

Signs You Might Have an Unhealthy Relationship to Tech:

  • You Text and Talk at the Same Time. You ask the person in front of you to wait so you can finish a text, watch a video, or read a post . . . and rarely notice when they walk off.
  • You Text and Walk (or drive!) at the Same Time. Not only does it take you twice as long to get to your destination its JUST.NOT.SAFE. If you cant resist commuting while texting it might be time to turn your phone off. (I like you – please no accidents!)
  • You feel naked without your phone. Have you ever left your phone at home and panicked? Not such a good sign. If you you break out in a sweat without your tech, its a sign you’re an addict.
  • You repeatedly end up online longer than you originally intended. Late nights accidently surfing instagram? And you tell me you are tired…
  • You spend more time with your friends online than you do in the REAL world.
  • You deny it (sometimes defensively) when another person makes a negative comment about how much time you spend online.
  • You check your mobile phone in the bathroom. (way too common – EW! Please dont text me while you poo. )
  • You impatiently wait to get done with real interactions so that you can get online or check your phone.
  • You find yourself distracted by thoughts of how many facebook notifications, emails, or texts you might have to reply to.
  • You have a hard time maintaining focus on a project, conversation, or event.
  • You dont know how to NOT instagram an experience. You spend a noticeable amount of time on friend outings, events, or vacations posting online or absorbed in your phone.
  • You feel a physical and emotional urge to check in with your online community throughout the day.
  • You never take a break from responding, tweeting, emailing, texting…. You live in “Fight or Flight” mode and your nervous system is frazzled. You are anxious, stressed, and tired.

If you answered YES to any of the above statements, it may be time to work on a healthier relationship to your tech. Awareness is the first step in making a change to healthier, more fulfilling, real world living. You don’t have to live your life through a device. Here are my tips for working with your technology to enhance your life vs. allowing your tech to take you away from living it.

Caroline’s Tips for a Healthy Relationship With Tech:

  • Create NO phone time zones. Set aside times in your day to put the phone away and focus on what you are doing. I hold “office hours” for myself in the morning where I literally put my phone in the CLOSET (truth!). This way Im not tempted to innocently check it during work and can enjoy my morning distraction free and present. Im a huge advocate for creating no-phone time-zones for yourself. This means that for at least 2 hours of your day (when you’re most productive work happens) you close off your phone and stay completely dedicated to the work in front of you.

  • Create a digital bedtime. Power off your phone an hour before bed time to ensure that your last hour is spent in a meaningful way and that you get to bed on time to start the next day afresh. I like to set a bed time for my phone and power it off at a set time at night. Your phone is just not worth losing sleep over. Leave your phone in another room so that you can get the real rest you need without the distraction.
  • Remember: YOU teach people how to text you! If you respond to texts, emails, or phone calls at all hours of the day, people will think you are available at all hours of the day. If you dont want people texting you during work, DONT RESPOND TO TEXTS DURING WORK. If you dont set boundaries for yourself no one else will.
  • Note: Successful people dont waste hours surfing online and successful people aren’t slaves to their email. The biggest obstacle to productivity is connectivityYou want to be successful? Manage your time well.
  • GET REAL. When you are with friends and people you care about commit to be present. Always put the real person before the digital one.
  • When on a trip, pack your phone in your suitcase or somewhere out of reach for two hours at a time. Gradually increase that amount. Enjoy the scenery and the people in it. EXPERIENCE IT.
  • Set a timer for how long you want to spend “surfing” the web or using your tech. Set it and stick to the allotted amount of time. That way you can still get your “fix” without over-doing it.
  • Take a digital detox weekend or retreat. Book yourself a holiday a leave ALL technology at home. If this sounds like a huge challenge, chances are you NEED it. Give yourself a break from all tech and come back with a new perspective and feeling refreshed.

Is your relationship to technology healthy? What advice do you have for living a positive, present life? Leave your words as a comment below, Id love to know how you and your tech share a healthy life together.

I challenge you to try this: Put down the phone. Put down the iPad. Be present and be in the moment for just one day. Enjoy the conversation of those that are physically with you — those who have chosen to take time out of their lives and spend it with you. Watch an entire movie without checking your phone. Have a full conversation without glancing at a screen. Disconnect for just a moment. I’m up for the challenge…are you?

Long, Lean, Dancer Ab Routine (To help You Train for Costa Rica January 2015)

I could dance before I could walk. My mother put me in ballet slippers before any other shoe and I havent stopped moving since. I worked my way up in the Royal Academy of Ballet elementary through high school, and went on to earn my B.A. in Dance at UCDavis. I loved how dance made me feel free, allowed me to express myself, move to music, and be in the moment. My history in dance instilled in me a love of movement – not just for the body benefits but for my SPIRIT. I carry that with me now in every workout. Its not just physical – my soul benefits when I move.

Dance training involves a lot of daily physical therapy exercises in order to keep the body strong and injury free. Every day the dancer does foot work, hip work, core work, mobility, flexibility, and strength training to keep their body performing at it’s peak. Many of the dance prep exercises are pilates based movements that lengthen, strengthen, and use the entire body as one. This explains why dancers are functionally fit athletes – in shape bodies that can do AMAZING things.

Through creating videos for my YouTube channel, I have received many requests for dance based workouts. I filmed this dance ab workout routine to demonstrate some of the moves we used in my dance training days. These exercises were done daily in the studio and will help shape and tone a dancer’s 6 pack stomach. This video is a blend of pilates and dance based ab exercises designed to lengthen, tone, and shape the core without adding bulk. The moves you will go through in this video include:

  • The pilates hundred
  • Flutter Kicks
  • Single leg stretch
  • Double Leg Stretch
  • Single Leg criss cross
  • Pilates roll up
  • V sit with a twist
  • Plank with a calf stretch

Dancers work their core muscles daily because they recognize how important it is to performance and health. Your core supports every thing you do. Having strong abs will help you move better, dance better, look better, AND have amazing posture. This routine can be done a few times a week in combination with regular cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Combined with consistent exercise and a clean, healthy diet, this ab routine will help you feel better in your body and achieve amazing physique results.

You can work through this video at a gym, at home, in the dance studio, or while traveling. Repeat the series 2-3 times if you need an extra challenge!

As always, please check with your doctor before starting this or any exercise routine. Honor your body and its needs – exercise mindfully always.

Easy Apple Protein Smoothie Recipe. Healthy Energy for Busy Days!

Blend up this easy apple protein smoothie recipe for busy days on the go to fuel your life with power.

protein smoothie

A healthy protein smoothie a day keeps the doctor away! Or is the saying “an apple a day”? Well either way you say it – you get both with this delicious apple protein smoothie! There’s nothing quite like the sweet, crisp taste of an apple. This thick protein smoothie tastes just like apple pie and makes a delicious, healthy breakfast or snack on the go. It is so rich and creamy that you will have a hard time believing that it is actually good for you! Keep this protein smoothie recipe on hand for days when you need a quick and healthy option to fuel your busy life. It makes for a great choice after the gym or before work.

Easy Apple Protein Smoothie Recipe. Healthy Energy for Busy Days.

(Serves One)

Ingredients:
      • ½ to 1 cup ice, depending on how frosty you like your smoothies
      • 1 medium apple, cubed (Peel on/off, you decide. I leave it on.) LOVING the Fugi apples right now.
      • 1 scoop protein powder of your choice. I use Vega One in French Vanilla, Vega in Vanilla Chai (for extra spicy flavor) or Vega Sport for extra protein (30g per serving!). I prefer Vega protein powder because it features all natural, premium plant based protein, is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, and probiotics. There are no artificial ingredients and it has the most amazing taste.
      • 2 teaspoons honey (adjust to taste, or omit; you could also use maple syrup or agave nectar)
      • Heaping ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
      • 6 ounces milk (plant-based or dairy, it’s up to you) I use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (Unsweetened). Its only 30 calories per serving and makes the protein smoothie thicker.
      • Bonus: Ground ginger, nutmeg or a dash of mace would be lovely in this smoothie, with or without the cinnamon. Of course, you’ll adjust those to your own taste, but you may not want near as much of those as the cinnamon, as they have stronger flavors (and the ginger can be a bit pungent).
Instructions
    1. Place all ingredients in blender. Don’t have a fancy Vitamix?! I use a simple and effective Magic Bullet Blender. It’s easy to use, portable, and a million times cheaper than fancier blenders while providing the same protein smoothie result. Mine has lasted 3 years and is still going! Highly recommend it until your budget allows for a Vitamix 🙂
    2. Blend smoothie until it’s all smooth and frosty.
    3. Pour it up, fancy it up in a nice glass, and enjoy!

This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, vegan, and certified non-GMO (so pretty much a good choice no matter what diet you follow). Drinking this protein smoothie will help build and repair healthy muscles and deliver high quality nutritional support so that you can continue to kick butt in work, wellness, and life.

This recipe has fiber, protein, and will leave you feeling full long after you take your last sip. It is the perfect solution if you have busy days and want to power them up with nutritious energy. Not only that but it tastes heavenly…. Can you have your apple pie and be healthy too? I think so 🙂 Blend it up, pour it up, and let’s toast to your health.

Cheers,

Caroline
