BOOTYcamp June 2016 Event Recap.

Teaching BOOTYcamp. What a BOOTYlicious night!

Teaching BOOTYcamp. What a BOOTYlicious night!

I am still coming down from the high of such an incredible BOOTYcamp.  The entire event was so much fun to host from start to finish. I began planning the experience with the intention of creating a one of a kind night where guests could bond over fitness.  As a fitness professional for over 16 years (omg! getting old! 😉 ), I’ve seen the magic that can happen in group exercise. I believe fitness is one of the most powerful ways to bring people together and bring joy to people’s lives.

The day of BOOTYcamp I didn’t need an alarm to wake up. I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to go out, dance, squat, plank, and socialize with friends. 6pm couldn’t come fast enough.

I arrived an hour early to set up at City Night Club in SF. The venue is right across the street from one of my favorite San Francisco Whole Foods locations (which in my book is a really good sign ;). I met with the City Night’s event crew, the MoveWith team, and the product vendors to set up. I was impressed by the cleanliness and layout of the City Nights club space. It’s a perfect venue to host a workout class. As I was setting up the music and micraphone, I invited the staff to join us in the class. The club manager seemed unsure about the experience (I get it. It’s not always easy to trust a bubbly blond wearing pink pants). “I don’t have workout clothes on me, but I hope to take the class next time” she said. “Ok!” I replied with a smile, “Just know you are always welcome to join in if you change your mind.”

Guests started to arrive at 5:45pm and were greeted by the MoveWith team with glow sticks as fun fitness accessories for the class. The first room of the club was set up with treats. Guests were invited to enjoy ZICO Coconut Water mocktails, ALOHA daily greens, and cold Clearly Kombucha drinks.

The second room held the workout space: a large dance floor with three levels. Guests set up their exercise mats along the first two levels underneath the neon lights and disco ball. We supplied extra red MoveWith and blue ZICO yoga mats for guests who didn’t bring their own. People trickled in and started socializing. There were selfies, smiles, and lots of new introductions.

The turnout was great (around 62 people). It was a good size for the club, the space felt full but everyone had enough room to move. There were participants of a wide range of fitness levels and experience: everything from advanced athletes, two pregnant women (4 and 7 months), straight men (smart guys ;), and even a mother and daughter team (love).

At 6:15 I welcomed everyone and introduced the evening. “This event is different and I LOVE it. I want to invite you to have fun, move at your own pace, and focus on feeling good. Our goal tonight is to sweat, squat, smile, and repeat!”

My friend Ray Kang is a talented DJ who created a special music mix for the class. I gave him some of my all time favorite butt themed songs and he blended them together in a non-stop mash-up mix of fun. “My Humps”, “Bubble Butt”, “Drop It Low”, “Rump Shaker”, and more. The music was a huge highlight of the night.

IMG_3078

The workout involved a low-impact hour of effective butt shaping, total body exercises. It was a seamless series that flowed from one sequence to the next and worked with the music. Guests ranged in fitness level,  so the workout was structured in a way that everyone could find their own unique challenge and set the pace.

In-fact it was such an inviting challenge, I looked over half-way through the class to find the club manager, dressed in her street clothes, on a mat and moving through the workout with us! She later told me that mid-way through the class it looked like so much fun she had to join. “Thanks for inviting me, Im really glad I changed my mind! Now my energy is pumped up for the rest of my night, and thats a gift that makes getting my work clothes sweaty worth it.”

Yes. I’d agree with that 🙂

One of the coolest things about an event like BOOTYcamp is that it invites each participant to be completely in the moment. Because you are in a unique enviornment, surrounded by new people, and actively engaged in following a new workout format, you to become completely present. It is not your average “plug in and go” workout. The BOOTYcamp class felt connected and the energy was through the roof.

We finished our class with a cool-down and simple yoga stretch flow. I congratulated the room on a workout well done. I took a moment to acknowledge the participants, “I am proud of you for coming out tonight. It takes real courage to step out of your comfort zone and attend a class like this.  I am inspired by your willingness to try something new, to have fun with fitness, and to stretch yourself. I am so grateful to have shared this BOOTYlicious night out with you. My butt loves you. I hope you know how BOOTYful you are inside and out.”

Post class butt photos were a must…. all smiles after squats 🙂

Hodges was decided on June 26, 2015, which granted marriage equality to same-sex couples. Try out these healthy rainbow-colored detox recipes to show your support and pride for this historic month.

Golden State Warriors Basketball Workout. NBA Finals 2016!

Golden State Warriors Basketball Workout.

NBA Finals 2016!

Golden-State-Warriors-NBA-Finals-Workout

It has been an exciting season of basketball in San Francisco. The Golden State Warriors won the NBA Finals last year and their star player, Stephen Curry, was the League’s MVP. And this year the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors are meeting yet again in a highly anticipated rematch that has basketball fans on the edge of their seats. The entire Bay Area is excited to watch what might be the most epic showdown during the 2016 NBA Finals, will the Warriors defend their title against the Cavaliers? (We sure hope so!)

The basketball energy has been building in the Bay. After Shaquille O’Neal came to my spin class, I’ve been seeing NBA players all over the place. I teach fitness classes at both the Market and Pine Street EQUINOX clubs. The Cleveland Cavaliers have been working out at the Market Street EQUINOX, while all stars like Shaq and Grant Hill have been staying fit at the Pine Street location. Shaq comes to Pine Street so often we’ve become friends (exchanging fist bumps and “whats up” with him gives me a smile all day long). I’m starting to feel like NBA players are following me around…. I must be good luck or something!

The Warriors play with teamwork, hustle, and heart. They inspire us all to get in the game and score in life. All their hard work pays off, after all, rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the Western Conference Finals against OKC is no easy feat, but the Warriors did it, making them 1 out of 10 teams in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a 7 game series. They are on a roll and we are all hoping to see them WIN the NBA Finals. Let’s think positive and send them good vibes. Want to cheer them on?! Do this workout, wish them luck, and put good endorphin energy out into the universe.

The below drills are designed to work on your strength, speed, stamina, and agility while burning calories and boosting energy. It’s a challenging workout – as always, please check with a doctor before beginning any new exercise routine. And note: *You DO NOT need a basketball or access to a basketball court field for this workouts. Just a positive attitude, a bottle of water, and some space!

Time for you to be your own MVP! Get in the game and let’s GO WARRIORS!

Will Eating Before Bed Make You Gain Weight? With Mini Wheats and Lays Chips It Might! Read this before you have a Pre-Bedtime Snack! Eat Well and you will Sleep Well in your Life.

It’s 10pm and you are winding down for bed. You feel that familiar pang in your stomach. Shoot, you’re hungry. And breakfast is a long night away.

You don’t want to go to bed hungry, but you’ve heard that eating before sleep causes weight gain. What do you do? Toss and turn or get up and have a snack?

There has been a lot of research on eating before sleep. For the most part, studies have concluded that meal frequency or timing doesn’t really matter. Calories can’t tell time.

What DOES matter is the types of foods and quantities that you are consuming. If you eat 2,000 calories in a day and burn 2,000 calories, you’ll maintain your weight. If you eat more calories than you burn you’ll gain weight. If you eat less calories than you burn (safely through diet and exercise) you’ll lose weight. It’s a simple equation of calories in vs calories out. So no, if you eat a healthy diet and balance calories in vs. calories out, eating before bed won’t pack on the pounds.

The reason eating before sleep is tied to weight gain is because if you wait to eat until late at night, it can lead to overeating. Yet remember, it’s the food that is making you fat in this case, not the fact that you’re eating before bed. If you must eat later at night, plan your meals out ahead of time and don’t eat more than you intended.

Also remember, there’s a big difference between a bag of Lays and a nutrient dense snack. And there’s also a big difference between mindful eating (eating when you are hungry) and mindless eating (eating when you are bored, stressed, anxious, sad, etc). Listen to your body!

If you are physically hungry before bed, then your body is asking you for nutrition. It’s important you give it something wholesome, a choice that will help you sleep well and recover. Remember, food is fuel. As long as you eat the right things, it’s absolutely fine to eat at night—and unless you’re really off on your portion sizes, your body will actually be stronger and fitter because of it.

Personally, I eat a pre-bedtime snack almost every day. My life in San francisco moves fast and I find myself needing more fuel to support my lifestyle. When I listen to my body and honor it’s hunger cues, I get the nutrition I need to move at top speed and sleep like a baby. And even with a pre-bedtime snack, I still wake up still hungry for my favorite meal: breakfast My metabolism moves fast thanks to regular, healthy meals and exercise.

Here are some of my favorite pre-bedtime foods that help me sleep soundly and feel strong the next morning.

Bedtime Snacks That Won’t Make You Gain Weight

Vega® Clean Protein Chocolate Milkshake.

This sweet treat is filled with a good for you plant-based protein blend made from pea, hemp, alfalfa, and pumpkin. With 130 calories a serving and 25 grams of complete, premium protein, this shake is sure to fill you up and help you recover while you sleep.

Ingredients:

Directions: Put in blender. Blend. Simple and fast bedtime snack!

Late night omelette.

Another great option full of protein and fat to keep you full. If you like savory, eggs are a good pre-bedtime snack for you.

Berry Chocolate Protein Pudding:

Here’s a recipe for sweet dreams with chocolate protein pudding. Fill your tummy with fuel and satisfy your sweet tooth too.

Ingredients:

Directions: Prepare in the morning and blend all ingredients until smooth. Store in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Grab a spoon and enjoy!

Growing Oatmeal recipe.

Instead of eating oatmeal at breakfast, you may want to consider consuming it as a pre-bedtime snack. Oats contain melatonin, which will aid your body in relaxing and falling asleep. It’s my favorite pre-bedtime choice.

Apple + 1-2 Tbsp nut butter

I love this as a late night snack especially with a good, chilled, crunchy apple. You can use almond butter or any other nut butter.

Bottom line: Listen to your body and honor it. Focus your efforts on the quality and quantity of what you eat more then when you eat it. Do this and you’ll always be fueled for success!

Do you eat before bed? What is your favorite pre-bedtime snack? Let me know in the comments below.

Sweet Dreams my friends,

Caroline
