Holiday Hangover Cure.

 holiday-party
We’ve all been there. A few too many servings of holiday parties, rich foods, booze, and sugar has left you feeling completely dysfunctional. Your head hurts, your digestion is off, and you crave a remedy ASAP. Want to cure the holiday party hangover and return to your normal energetic persona?
If you are feeling like your body got hit by a truck from splurging on holiday treats and endless merry drinks, here are my top tips on what I typically do to detox my body (and mind) from overindulgence.

Holiday Hangover Cure.

Detox Your Body, Renew Your Energy,

and Be Merry!

1. Don’t Starve. A lot of people don’t eat the day following a ‘cheat meal’ or holiday party because of guilt. Starving yourself is self sabotage, it causes your metabolism to slow and can lead to yo-yo dieting, binge eating, and weight fluctuations (read: why your diet is making you fat). Instead, get right back on track, do the next best thing, and make a healthy choice. Continue eating balanced meals full of real foods and quality nutrients. No extremes or yo-yoing!

2. Stop with the guilt trippin’. Don’t overanalyze what you ate in the past or beat yourself up for it. Don’t let the guilt over one unhealthy meal turn into more. Everything that has happened has happened. Wallowing in guilt or self pity does nothing positive for you. Learn, let go, and move forward. If you need more support letting go, heres my “snap out of it” strategy to help you  break free from guilt, make peace with yourself, and accomplish your wellness goals.

3. Drink lots of water with lemon. Its hard to remember to drink water, especially when your schedule is jam packed with to-dos. I always bring a water bottle everywhere I go and pound down the H20 to ensure I’m staying hydrated and keep my digestive system happy. If you are drinking enough, your urine should look like lemon juice. If it looks like apple juice you are dehydrated! Getting enough fluids will help with bloating, digestion, and body balance.

4. Workout. Movement is medicine. Do something to active to promote circulation, restore your energy, and a sweat the tiredness (or hangover) out of your system. This is one of the best ways to beat the belly bloating, headache, and fatigue that often comes with eating heavy foods or drinking. Remember, When you aren’t moving, nothing else is either!  Any movement is better than none and will go a long way in helping you recover and restore your energy to normal. Even a walk can prove beneficial, do whatever allows your stomach to feel its best. When I am feeling fatigued I like to do easy aerobic cardio or bodyweight strength combined with and a nice soothing yoga inspired flow. The below at home bodyweight strength routine and yoga inspired flow series is the perfect remedy after a late night out. Combine it with an easy walk outside and you should be feeling back to normal in no time.

5. Take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (usually I dilute it in 8oz water). The acidity cleanses your body. Here’s my recipe for a morning apple cider vinegar detox drink. I swear by this drink! Food coma or not, its totally worth drinking daily.

6. Eat Raw Foods. Raw (uncooked) foods have a higher nutrition content and has roughage to help expel the unhealthy foods out of your system.

7. Get rid of the extra sugar, treats, and leftovers. If you don’t want to eat it, don’t keep it in your house. This will help you manage temptation and avoid eating holiday treats at every meal or snack. You don’t have to throw it away, you can give leftovers to friends or those in need. Or you can keep the post holiday treats out of sight and out of reach and allow yourself some in moderation. Sugar in general is very toxic to your body and more addicting than cocaine. If you don’t trust yourself around the substance, it might be best to remove yourself from it.

8. Eat clean, feel good foods post hangover. If you feel extra heavy from your holiday intake,  limit your consumption of processed carbohydrates and eat more foods with high nutrition. Sorry but the typical greasy hangover fare wont help your body. Balance out the holiday parties with light, nutrient filled meals as much as possible and you’ll feel better.

9. Make a plan not over-indulge for the next few days. Balance out holiday parties with healthy habits. It helps to plan out ahead of time what dates you’ll know you’ll be indulging so that you can commit to staying on track the other days. This helps you savor your nights out and stay on track with your healthy habits a majority of the time. Read the 80/20 Rule.

10. Remember ‘Thoughts Become Things’. Don’t beat yourself up or tell yourself you’re fat, lazy, or weak-minded. Keep your thoughts positive, supportive, and constructive. The holidays are a time to be enjoyed not struggled through. Get your mind right and your actions will follow. Powerful, purposeful thinking will always help you move forward no matter how bad your holiday hangover.

Enjoying the holiday season doesn’t need to totally derail your efforts to stay healthy. There may be some rough mornings and startlingly large food babies in your future, but Im positive if you follow the suggestions above, you’ll still start the new year on the nice list. Whats one way you help your body feel better during the holiday season of parties, traveling, and merry making? Let me know in the comments below.

Wishing you a happy and blessed holiday season my friend.

Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and What I’m Grateful For.

The last 2 years have been quite the adventure….

On October 18th, 2016 I published my first book, Balanced Body Breakthrough, my wellness coaching guide to getting your mind, body, and spirit in great shape so you can love your life.

The journey was filled with ups and downs, challenges, lessons, a whole lot of personal growth, and took me 2 years to complete from start to finish. One of the hardest things I’ve done in my life and also one of the most rewarding. In fact, I’m already starting to want to write a book again…

I vividly remember the day I got the inspiration for Balanced Body Breakthrough in my head. I had the idea during an acupuncture treatment (great things come from those tiny needles) and I remember jumping off the table excited, “I am going to write a book!” I told all my friends and family. I started writing right away. From that point on I couldn’t stop. I put aside nonnegotiable time each day to work on it. Exclusive “book only time”. No phone, no email, no meetings, no facebooking, or innocent instagram checking. Just me and writing. I loved it.

I completed the first draft within 6 months. 278 pages. I was pumped, I had finished writing my book! Then I started to research the next step: getting it published. I read, watched Youtube videos, interviewed authors, put out queries, googled, googled some more… and then I started to get really discouraged. Damn, publishing a book is expensive and hard. Like really hard. Unless you are famous, rich, or Kim Kardashian, getting a book published will take some blood, sweat, and unicorn magic. I spent about 4 months researching to figure out the best course. I didn’t want to go bankrupt in trying to publish it, but strongly believed in the book’s purpose and powerful content.

The truth is: stress and burnout have become extreme health problems in our world today, and exercise, nutrition, sleep, meditation, and relaxation dramatically help. According to the World Health Organization, the cost of stress to American businesses is as high as $300 billion and unless we change course, this will only get worse. Over the last 30 years, self-reported levels of stress have increased 18% for women and 25% for men. This has tremendous consequences because of the role stress plays in a wide array of illnesses; like high blood pressure, which afflicts nearly 70 million, and which costs $130 billion a year to treat. Or diabetes, which 25 million Americans have.

I know firsthand the negative impact of stress. I’ve been burnout, depressed, lost, overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated, sleepless, and broken. I recovered my life and rediscovered the joy in it.  I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live in a world where people are getting sick from stress. I wrote Balanced Body Breakthrough because I wanted to share my story and help people beat burnout to find success through health. Getting sick and burnout should not be an expected side effect of life.

I knew I couldn’t give up. This work was needed, I had to make this book come to life. Then I came across Inkshares, a reader based crowd funding publisher that works off book pre-orders. I decided to go for it and run a pre-order kickstarter campaign on the platform. I had to sell 250 pre-order copies of my book to get it published. I hustled hard. I asked for support from my community online and off. My friends and family generously donated their time and help. I started the campaign at the end of September 2015 and reached my goal January 2016 (great start to the year!). From there, the publishing process began with Inkshares. I worked with their editing team on the manuscript through a million structural, copy, digital, and interior edits (did you know how many versions a book goes through before it becomes real? a LOT). I worked endlessly on edits and took regular walks to give myself computer breaks. I shot book images with Mark Kuroda of Kuroda Studios and designed the book cover with graphic designer Lexie Tiogngson.

Then all of a sudden it was time to set a date to publish the book. I planned a launch party on the official book “Pub Date” and Equinox generously opened their doors to host. Everyone was invited, my community of clients, colleagues, and friends from all walks of life. We sampled treats from my generous partners including Suja Juice, PurePharma, Zico Coconut water, Clearly Kombucha, Perfect Bar, Vega, NuNaturals, Fitbit, and Rothy’s. The event was a night full of love. I walked around with stars in my eyes and happiness in my heart. When I see the book on the shelf I think of all the people who made the dream possible and fill my world. To share a publish date party with my community was a memory I’ll always hold close to my heart.

I can’t even begin to tell you how good it feels to see this long term dream come to life. It’s like climbing to the top of a huge mountain, admiring at how far you’ve climbed, how much stronger you are, and sitting back to savor the view. One of those, “Wow I did it!” kind of moments where you recognize that all the effort was worth it and are renewed with a deep sense of purpose and appreciation for life.

Today one of my biggest goals is to use the book as another platform to support my corporate and public wellness work. I want to see it succeed as a tool and resource for company + individual health. I also plan to host events that incorporate the book’s content of mind, body, and spirit wellness. I am on a mission to help people develop a positive relationship to self and exercise that adds quality to their lives. This book is a tool that helps me empower others to create a life that feels good on the inside and to live every moment with wisdom, well-being, and gratitude.

I am so excited to share this book with you and support you in beating stress, finding health, and LOVING life. You can order your copy of Balanced Body Breakthrough here.

Burn More Calories When You Sit Upright!

150

Did you know that sitting upright daily will help you burn up to 350 more calories a day?! Burn calories while you sit? Yes. I like it.

When I was working on writing my first book, I started to notice my body hurt. My back would be sore. My shoulders would feel tight. My hips would get all out of whack. I started to wonder why my workouts weren’t feeling as hot. And then it hit me. I was spending a lot of time sitting. A lot. And my posture was not on point.

Growing up a dancer and fitness instructor, I wasn’t used to spending so many consistent hours on the computer. But I had become so excited working on writing my book that my posture took a hit. Once I realized I was slouching, I decided to take action and work towards counterbalancing the negative effects of all that sitting. Posture is EVERYTHING. It effects how you move, perform, and feel. Not to mention you just look better when you stand up tall. Now I’ve come to truly appreciate the value of good posture and keep my posture in check using these lifestyle hacks:

  • Work it OUT. Follow a balanced exercise program that incorporates corrective exercises for good posture. Do exercises that stretch and open the front of your body (chest, shoulders, hip flexors, and quads) and strengthen the back/core of your body (upper back, lower back, abdominals, butt, hamstrings).  Stretch the front, strengthen the back. Simple right? If you are not sure which exercises to do, I’ve put together a few posture perfect workout videos for you on Youtube. These exercises are a sample of what you can do to improve your posture and look as tall as you feel. Press play and let me know if you feel taller after.

  • Time it. Human beings are not designed to sit in an office all day,  we are built to move!  Every hour, get out of your office chair and move. Even 1-2 minutes of simple exercises and stretches can work wonders.
  • Think up! If you feel your head or shoulders jut forward, pull them back and act as if a string were pulling you up from the top of your head.
  • Sit Tall.  Establish good posture at your desk: Sit with your back against your chair and feet flat on the floor. When you look at a computer screen, your eyes should be level with the center of it. If they aren’t, raise or lower the monitor.
  • Use Tech to help. Need more help keeping your posture in check? Use your smart phone with a posture training app. Try game changing wearable posture devices like UPRIGHT, a Smart Wearable Posture Trainer with Free IOS and Android App. UPRIGHT is a device that attaches to your upper or lower back and accurately detects when you are slouching with unique technology. It vibrates when you slouch and reminds you to sit upright. Through it’s device and app training program, it allows you to gradually train your core muscles and build muscle memory, so eventually you will be able to maintain an upright posture almost entirely subconsciously. I’ve been using the UPRIGHT device to help me sit tall, you can watch me demonstrate how I use it in this video: Learn more about UPRIGHT at http://www.uprightpose.com/

Now that I’ve got my posture back on point, my body is feeling so much better about life. And I’m about ready to start writing another book! This time, I’ll make sure to remember to sit tall and whistle while I work 😉

Do you work on your posture? What things to you do to make sure you stand tall?

Keep shining my friends,

Caroline
