Since the month of June is LGBT Pride month, I thought it would be fun to share some delicious rainbow recipes with you to celebrate. San Francisco is decked out in rainbow and it’s awesome to live in a city that supports LOVE and equality. June became LGBT pride month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred in late June of 1969. More recently, the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges was decided on June 26, 2015, which granted marriage equality to same-sex couples. Try out these healthy rainbow-colored detox recipes to show your support and pride for this historic month.

Rainbow Protein Smoothie

Recipe from Vega

Serves one

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Blend 1 serving of Vega One with 1 banana, ½ cup ice, and 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, until smooth
  2. Pour half of smoothie into a glass, keeping the other half in the blender
  3. Add raspberries and blend until smooth
  4. Pour half of remaining smoothie on top of 1stlayer in glass
  5. Add blueberries to remaining smoothie in blender, and blend until smooth
  6. Top off the glass with your final layer of smoothie
  7. Enjoy!

Rainbow Detox Salad

Try this healthy rainbow detox salad when you are looking for a tasty and filling lunch. Low in calories, rich in vitamins, low in carbohydrates, vegan, gluten-free, with plant based protein, and fiber to keep you going throughout the day.

Recipe from ALOHA

Makes 2-4 servings, based on portion size (you will have dressing leftover).

Ingredients

Lemon & Olive Oil Superfood Dressing

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup lemon juice

1 small clove garlic, finely chopped

1 packet of ALOHA Daily Good Greens

1 teaspoon honey

Salad

2 cups chopped kale

1/8 cup chopped mint

1/4 cup cooked quinoa

1/4 cup grilled garbanzo beans

1/4 cup grilled corn

1/4 cup chopped cherry tomatoes

1/4 cup chopped red pepper

1 tablespoon of olive oil

Preparation

In a medium saucepan bring 1/4 cup water to a soft boil. Add 1/8 cup uncooked quinoa. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the water has boiled off, and then set aside.

Heat a frying pan on medium. Add the olive oil, beans, and corn. Grill them until seared. Set aside.

In a large to medium mixing bowl add the kale, mint, tomatoes, and red bell pepper. Top with the grilled quinoa, corn, and garbanzo beans. Serve with the Lemon & Olive Oil Superfood Dressing and enjoy!

When we think about health we often think: diet, exercise, and regular visits to the doc.  But did you know that what you drink makes a huge difference on if you are successful or not with your health goals? A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that around 37 percent of our total daily liquid calories come from sugar-sweetened drinks. And here’s the really crazy part: Guzzling those beverages has a bigger impact on our waistlines than we think. “People don’t typically reduce food intake when they drink their calories from soda and other beverages,” says Barry Popkin, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina. By my definition, any calorie you consume without noticing is an empty calorie. And since calories add up, it’s time to learn how to drink fewer empty ones. Awareness is the first step to sipping mindfully. Feeling thirsty? Heres an example on how many calories beverages can contribute to your daily intake. As you can see in the example below, calories from drinks can really add up. But by boosting awareness and choosing mindfully,  you can reduce the number of calories you take in when you get thirsty. (image courtesy of CDC)

You Better Look Twice. Read Nutrition Facts Labels Carefully

Be aware that the Nutrition Facts label on beverage containers may give the calories for only part of the contents. The example below shows the label on a 20-oz. bottle. As you can see, it lists the number of calories in an 8-oz. serving (100) even though the bottle contains 20 oz. or 2.5 servings. To figure out how many calories are in the whole bottle, you need to multiply the number of calories in one serving by the number of servings in the bottle (100 x 2.5). You can see that the contents of the entire bottle actually contain 250 calories even though what the label calls a “serving” only contains 100. Look closely at the serving size when comparing the calorie content of different beverages, you could be getting twice the calories if you aren’t careful!

Sugar by Any Other Name: How To Tell Whether Your Drink Is Sweetened

Sweeteners that add calories to a beverage go by many different names and are not always obvious to anyone looking at the ingredients list. Some common caloric sweeteners are listed below. If these appear in the ingredients list of your favorite beverage, you are drinking a sugar-sweetened beverage.

  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Fructose
  • Fruit juice concentrates
  • Honey
  • Sugar
  • Syrup
  • Corn syrup
  • Sucrose
  • Dextrose

Sipping Slueth. Find High-Calorie Culprits in Unexpected Places

Coffee drinks and blended fruit smoothies sound innocent enough, but the calories in some of your favorite coffee-shop or smoothie-stand items may surprise you. Check the Web site or in-store nutrition information of your favorite coffee or smoothie shop to find out how many calories are in different menu items. And when a smoothie or coffee craving kicks in, here are some tips to help minimize the caloric damage:

At the coffee shop:

  • Request that your drink be made with fat-free, low-fat milk, soy, or almond milk instead of whole milk or half and half
  • Order the smallest size available.
  • Forgo the extra flavoring – the flavor syrups used in coffee shops, like vanilla or hazelnut, are sugar-sweetened and will add calories to your drink.
  • Skip the Whip. The whipped cream on top of coffee drinks adds calories and fat.
  • Get back to basics. Order a plain cup of coffee with fat-free/soy/almond milk and a splash of truvia (or brown sugar) or drink it black.

At the smoothie stand:

  • Order a child’s size if available.
  • Ask to see the nutrition information for each type of smoothie and pick the smoothie with the most nutrition and fewest calories.
  • Hold the sugar. Many smoothies contain added sugar in addition to the sugar naturally in fruit, juice, or yogurt. Ask that your smoothie be prepared without added sugar: the fruit is naturally sweet.

Mindfully sip the following Beverages in Moderation:

  • Milk Researchers at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville found that having three servings of low-fat dairy per day can lead to weight loss of 10 percent or more. Dairy contains calcium and the amino acid leucine, which together promote fat burning, says Michael Zemel, Ph.D., director of the university’s Nutrition Institute. And a study of overweight women at Northern Illinois University found that soy milk was just as effective as nonfat cow’s milk in helping them shed pounds. Stick to skim or low-fat milk, almond milk, and light soy milk; otherwise, the calories add up quickly. And always watch the portion size. 
  • Alcohol Happy hour is good for plenty of things, but weight loss isn’t one of them. Savoring a drink every now and then does have perks, including reducing your risk of heart disease, but alcohol packs a lot of calories into a small glass, and it may even stimulate your appetite. And unlike the calories in fat, carbohydrates, and protein, those in alcohol can’t be stored in your body, so they have to be used immediately. As a result, your body stops burning fat until the alcohol is processed—that’s roughly an hour for every drink.   • Juice Many juices have added sugars. And in terms of health benefits, you’re always better off eating whole fruit instead. A medium orange has a mere 59 calories, and its 12 grams of sugar come with three grams of belly-­filling fiber. A typical eight-ounce glass of OJ has 110 calories, twice as much sugar as the fruit, and no fiber. For a healthier juice fix, try watering it down. Mix four ounces of your favorite kind with 32 ounces of water. You’ll get the flavor with fewer calories. 
  • Diet soda No calorie soda may not pile on the pounds directly, but new research from Purdue University suggests that drinking these artificially sweetened beverages can screw with the brain’s ability to measure caloric intake. Drink them often enough and you may actually start to crave sweets more. You can read my personal story on how cutting out artificial sweeteners changed my health for the better HERE. If you swig diet drinks all day, you’re taking in fewer healthy liquids, such as tea. Get your carbonation fix with zero-calorie seltzer instead, or make your own with a home soda maker that carbonates your drink of choice.

Pour it Up With These Healthy Beverage Choices:

  • Water. This one is obvious of course. Drink fresh water as much as you can! Drinking more water can: increase energy, reduce fatigue, relieve constipation, help digestion, improve skin, aid in weight loss, boost immune system, cure headaches, and flush out toxins among other things. Not only that but water is FREE. All good reasons to drink up!
  • Tea. Hot or cold, it’s calorie-free, and comes in millions of different fun flavors for you to try. Studies have even found that compounds in green tea known as catechins rev your metabolism for up to 24 hours—meaning it actually helps you burn more calories. With so many varieties and stores like David’s Tea serving up endless samples, theres a good chance you can find a few tea flavors that meet your preferences. 
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (AVC) is rich in minerals. There is a long history of its use in medicine dating back to 400 B.C., when Hippocrates used it to treat his patients. AVC is considered to be a potent remedy for illnesses and overall health. Apple cider vinegar’s strong suit is balancing pH levels, and creating a healthy, alkalized state when you eat or drink it—or use it a skin-care product. (You want to be more alkaline than acidic for a trillion health reasons, some experts say.) It’s also pretty renowned in natural-health circles for curbing digestive issues, spiking weight loss, promoting great skin, and banishing a handful of other pesky afflictions. Read up on the health boosting benefits of this vinegar drink, and get my easy ACV detox drink recipe I have EVERYDAY for health! 
  • Kombucha. Check out KOMBUCHA. Kombucha (pronounced com-boo-ka) is a fizzy fermented tea beverage that is a health-seeker’s delight. Kombucha is an “ancient fermented tea beverage” that has a natural effervescence (like bubbly carbonation) that is full of probiotics, antioxidants, B vitamins and so much more.There are many brands that serve lower calorie beverage options, like my favorite: Clearly Kombucha who’s products clock in at 25 calories a piece. YES it really IS too good to be true (and delicious!)
  • Coconut Water. If you need a real sports drink to help with dehydration or just want some juice, try COCONUT water. It has more potassium per equivalent serving than a banana and It is lower in calories than any popularly consumed fruit juice including grapefruit juice
 (76 per eight ounce serving), and has 10% of the sodium found in tomato juice. For flavor, potassium, and hydration, coconut water is a healthful choice. Im addicted to ZICO natural and the chocolate flavor is a nice treat too!

Make it EASY to drink well. Simple lifestyle hacks for better beverage choices.

  • Choose water, diet, or low-calorie beverages instead of sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • For a quick, easy, and inexpensive thirst-quencher, carry a water bottle and refill it throughout the day.
  • Don’t “stock the fridge” with sugar-sweetened beverages. Instead, keep a jug or bottles of cold water in the fridge.
  • Serve water with meals.
  • Make water more exciting by adding slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or watermelon, or drink sparkling water.
  • Add a splash of 100% juice to plain sparkling water for a refreshing, low-calorie drink.
  • When you do opt for a sugar-sweetened beverage, go for the small size. Some companies are now selling 8-oz. cans and bottles of soda, which contain about 100 calories.
  • Be a role model for your friends and family by choosing healthy, low-calorie beverages. Healthiness is contagious – PASS it on!

Cutting back on drink calories can be a great way to kick start weight loss, re-boot energy levels, and achieve optimum health. A mindful and moderate beverage habit really can fill you up with health. Do you drink too many empty calories? As some of you know, I had my wisdom teeth pulled on January 24th, 2014. I was nervous for the surgery and wanted healing to happen smoothly. Before my extraction date I did my research on every possible holistic health remedy to aid in a quick recovery. With a family full of doctors and many friends fascinated by health, I was able to accumulate a lot of quality information on the subject. I thought Id share the below with you should you ever (god forbid) have to have any sort of surgery. These tips are not to replace the advice of your health care practitioner, so please take your doctor’s advice first on the matter 🙂 The below is meant to help you should you want alternative remedies to just using drugs and ice. Ive included links to my preferred supplements, but always always always read labels to make sure a specific supplement works for you. Take what works for you and feel free to leave the rest. And always always always ask your doctor first!

Holistic Healing Tips for Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Pre- Surgery.

A few supplements both before and after surgery will help you heal faster and detox your liver from the anesthesia.

  • Begin taking milk thistle before surgery, and then continue for a month after (follow label instructions for dosage). This wonderful herb protects, rejuvenates and repairs the liver. General anesthesia and other medications used during and after surgery are exceptionally hard on the liver, so anything you can do to protect this vital organ will be a big plus for your surgery recovery. Nature’s Way Milk Thistle.
  • Increase your zinc intake to 30–50 mg for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery, using zinc picolinate. Zinc is critical to wound healing, and surgery or trauma can decrease the level of zinc in your body. Solgar Zinc Picolinate Tablets
  • Start taking a probiotic supplement two weeks before surgery, and continue using it for at least a month afterward—or, better yet, indefinitely. Choose a strain that contains acidophilus and bifida bacteria (follow label instructions for dosage). Surgical patients often receive oral or intravenous antibiotics in the hospital, which creates the potential for fungal disorders (including yeast infections), digestive disturbances and diarrhea. A probiotic can help counteract these problems, promoting surgery recovery. Jarrow Formulas Jarro-dophilus EPS
  • It is an excellent idea to use Arnica both before and after surgery. I call this remedy the ‘homeopathic exception’ because it is one that works for almost every person for the same condition (this is contrary to how homeopathy generally works in that a remedy needs to be prescribed on an individual basis). It works to reduce inflammation and speed healing which in turn helps to relieve some of the pain associated with surgery. It has a particular action on soft tissue and is well known as a remedy for bruising. You can take pellets orally and it is also available as a topical ointment or massage oil for sprains and bruising. Boiron Arnica 30C Pellets

Post Surgery. 

  • Take 250 mg of vitamin B6 twice a day for a week, starting three days after surgery. This nutrient helps reduce post-surgical fluid retention, such as swelling of the face, hands, feet or legs. The swelling usually takes two to four weeks to go down. With B6, you can experience substantial reduction within 24 to 48 hours. Solgar – Vitamin B6
  • To reduce inflammation, take 2,000–3,000 mg of omega-3 fish oil per day for two weeks after surgery. You can then go to a maintenance dosage of 500–1,000 mg per day. If fish oil is already part of your daily routine, be sure to stop taking it five days before surgery, since it can promote blood thinning and increase bleeding during surgery. Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Formula
  • Take bromelain on an empty stomach for two weeks after surgery (follow label instructions for dosage). This formidable pineapple enzyme supplement helps prevent blood clots, aids the liver and digestion and decreases inflammation and pain after surgery—all vital to surgery recovery. It also helps to remove protein debris that form at trauma sites. Source Naturals Bromelain
  • Again, another supplement to relieve pain and inflammation is the homeopathic remedy Arnica 30C. Take one pellet four or five times a day for up to two weeks after surgery.

Whenever there are extensive supplement recommendations such as this, people always ask for the top three choices if they couldn’t—or didn’t want to—take everything. In this case, here’s what is typically recommended at a minimum:

Healing Foods

It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a joint replaced; a hysterectomy or a bypass operation, the body requires extra nutrients to heal, so focusing on nutrition can mean the difference between bouncing back and a lengthy recovery. It is possible to tweak your diet to enhance recovery from surgery. Virtually all vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and macronutrients like protein, fiber, and essential fatty acids are going to help with the healing process. A low quality diet that has few whole, natural foods is going to work against healing, and a nutrient-dense diet filled with whole, natural foods is going to be supportive. While that’s a very simple and general statement, it’s also a way of remembering that the Healthiest Way of Eating can go a long way in advancing the goal of healing. Foods to help you heal:

  • Some nutrients have taken center stage in the animal research on healing, and these nutrients include vitamin C, flavonoids, vitamin A, protein, and zinc. Rich sources of vitamin C and flavonoids include fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, bell peppers, cauliflower, and berries.
  • Certain amino acids seem to help wounds heal faster, so before—and especially after—surgery, make sure your meals and snacks feature fish, chicken, eggs (especially the whites), brown rice, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds.
  • Eat high quality protein foods before and after surgery. Foods that contain all of the essential amino acids are need to keep your immune system strong (the last thing you want is to get sick before surgery). After surgery protein-rich foods help wound healing and to make blood cells to replace blood losses from surgery.

Wisdom Tooth Healing recipes

Anti-inflammatory Pain Relief Smoothie.  

Put this on your list of anti-inflammatory recipes! All ingredients help to reduce inflammation in the body, and have a “cooling effect” as well. Pineapple is well known for it’s famous pain relieving enzyme “Bromelain” which is concentrated in the core of the fruit and has been isolated into supplement form to treat inflammation and pain naturally.

Ingredients:
  • I rib celery
  • I cup cucumber
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1/2 lime wedge peeled
  • 1 cup coconut water

Directions:

Add water or ice if desired. Blend and ENJOY!

Wisdom Tooth Cauliflower Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cauliflower, break into small pieces
  • 2 shallots chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 gala or fuji apple diced
  • 2 sticks celery chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 6 cups chicken stock or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup uncooked rice
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • dash of nutmeg
  • parsley for garnish

Directions:

  1. Saute the shallots, garlic, and celery in 1 T. of olive oil for 1-2 minutes. Add rice and stock. Cook till the rice is cooked and the vegetables are soft. Bring to a boil and add cauliflower and apple.
  2. Puree the soup and adjust the seasonings. If the soup is too thick add a bit more stock. Garnish with parsley.

Healing Organic Chicken Soup with Veggies & Brown Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 lb chicken, bought at the local farmers market. It comes frozen, with gizzards and all.
  • 1 lb carrots
  • 1 package celery (about 10 stalks, probably a little over a pound)
  • 1/2 lb dry beans or lentils
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled
  • bay leaf, clove of garlic, salt, pepper and other spices (turmeric)
  • 10 oz frozen package of peas or green beans
  • 1 lb dry, whole grain brown rice

Directions:

  1. Wash the whole chicken and chicken parts. Place in 8 or 13-quart soup pot, fill three-quarters full with water and bring to a boil. Add carrots, onion, lentils and sweet potato. Stir in garlic, bay leaf, oregano, and basil.
  2. Simmer covered for 1-1/2 hours. Add celery, beans, peas and parsley and cook for another 45 minutes. Spoon out the chicken bones and skim off some of the grease and fat from the top.
  3. Add Salt and pepper to taste.

Eat, enjoy, and think positive thoughts!

Oral Surgery, Wisdom Tooth removal, or Jaw stiffness can be painful and debilitating. After your wisdom tooth removal surgery or oral surgery, it is helpful to use some effective and easy mouth exercises for faster pain relief. These simple mouth exercises in the video below not only help you reduce the pain, but also decrease the swelling of your jaw and allow for faster recovery.

As ALWAYS check with your doctor and dentist before beginning any exercise routine. You can also ask your dentist for more recommended exercises, but here are some the general ones that are safe to use – even a day after your tooth extraction surgery.

1. Opening and Closing Your Mouth Slowly. The day after the procedure, you will notice when your jaw is still for a while, your muscles will be more swollen and harder to move. This may especially feel more obvious early in the morning, since your mouth hasn’t moved overnight. So to be able to open your mouth and speak or eat more easily, you can practice exercising the muscles gradually.

2. Neck Stretches Side to Side. Gently tilt your head to the side bringing your ear towards your shoulder stretching down the side of your neck. You can add a mouth stretch by opening and closing your mouth while doing this.

3. Sphinx pose. Lay on your belly with your forearms under your torso. Tilt your head up and down while in this position. Stretches your lower back, chest, neck, and jaw.

4. Smiling. Try alternating opening the mouth and smiling to bring movement back to the face, jaw, and mouth. Smiling not only helps you recover faster – it helps you feel better too 🙂

The best treatment for jaw stiffness from oral surgery is often as simple as doing these jaw exercises. Slow, passive stretching, multiple times a day, has proven to be effective in limiting stiffness, swelling and pain. But when I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed I couldn’t find any suggested exercises to do post surgery to feel better!! So I invented my own. The above exercises are from my personal experience with oral surgery and helped me recover quickly. I highly recommend following these helpful healing moves to maximize the surgery recovery process. Not only will you be able to recuperate faster, so you can get back to the enjoyable task of living each day to your full capability, you’ll also be able to make it through your surgery recovery more easily. Holiday Hangover Cure. Detox your Body, Renew Your Energy, and Be Merry!

You went to a holiday party last night, had a few too many cocktails, and woke up this morning without any energy and feeling completely dysfunctional. Your head hurts, your digestion is off, and you feel drained from a late night out. You need a remedy ASAP. How can you cure that holiday hang over and return to your normal energetic self?

If you are feeling not-too-proud about splurging on holiday treats and endless merry drinks, here’s my TEN TIPS on what I typically do to detox my body (and mind) from overindulgence.

Caroline’s Holiday Hangover Cure. Detox Your Body, Renew Your Energy, and Be Merry! 

1. Dont Starve. A lot of people don’t eat the day following a ‘cheat meal’ or holiday party because of guilt. Starving yourself is self sabotage, it causes your metabolism to slow and can lead to yo-yo dieting or weight fluctuations. Instead, get right back on track and do the next best thing. Continue eating your healthy meals balanced in lean protein, complex carbohydrates and unsaturated fats. No yo-yoing!

2. Don’t guilt trip! Don’t overanalyze what you ate in the past or beat yourself up for it. Everything that has happened has happened. Let go, move forward, and do the next best thing. Wallowing in guilt does nothing positive for you. If you need more support letting go, heres my “snap out of it” strategy to help you  break free from guilt, make peace with yourself, and accomplish your wellness goals.

3. Drink lots of water with lemon. I always bring a water bottle everywhere I go and ensure I’m staying hydrated and to keep my digestive system happy. If you are drinking enough, your urine should look like lemon juice. If it looks like apple juice you are dehydrated! Getting enough fluids will help you properly digest,  help restore body balance.

4. Workout. Do something to active to promote circulation, restore your energy, and a sweat the tiredness (or hangover) out of your system. This is one of the best ways to beat the belly bloat, headache, and fatigue that often comes with eating heavy foods or drinking. Remember, When you aren’t moving, nothing else is either!  Any movement is better than none and will go a long way in helping you recover and restore your energy to normal. Even a walk can prove beneficial, do whatever allows your stomach to feel its best. When I am feeling fatigued I like to do easy aerobic cardio or bodyweight strength combined with and a nice soothing yoga inspired flow. This at home bodyweight strength routine and yoga inspired flow series is the perfect remedy after a late night out. Combine it with an easy walk outside and you should be feeling back to normal in no time!

5. Take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (usually I dilute it in 8oz water). The acidity cleanses your body. Here’s my recipe for a morning apple cider vinegar detox drink. I swear by this drink! Hangover or not, its totally worth drinking daily.

6. Eat Raw Foods. Raw (uncooked) foods have a higher nutrition content and has roughage to help expel the unhealthy foods out of your system.

7. Hide the extra candy, treats, and leftovers! Its a good idea to keep the post holiday treats out of sight and out of reach. This will help you manage temptation and avoid eating holiday treats at every meal. Note: I didn’t say throw it away. You can always use it for baking or the occasional treat. Sugar in general is very toxic to your body.

8. If you feel extra heavy from your holiday intake, limit your carbohydrates in some of your meals today. Note: do not cut your calories, just get your calories more from lean protein or unsaturated fats (for me I eat a lot of nuts).

9. Make a plan to not over-indulge for the next few days. You want to balance out your ‘cheat meals’ of overeating 1-2 times a week (that’s my normal). So if you splurge on  Friday, be more aware to not over-indulge over the weekend.

10. Remember ‘Thoughts Become Things’. Don’t tell yourself you’re fat, lazy or weak-minded. Don’t define yourself based on what you eat or how much weigh. Affirm positive words and follow through with positive actions. Keep your thoughts positive, supportive, and constructive. Powerful, purposeful thinking will help you move forward!
